Growing up in the late 90s, Pokémon was the franchise that took over the world. I would wake up early every morning before school to catch the newest episode of the anime on TV, and beg my parents to buy me the latest Pokémon cards. But there was one thing that always stood out to me – the Kanto starter Pokémon. The decision between Bulbasaur, Squirtle and Charmander always felt like a huge one, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who spent hours agonising over the choice. So, I thought we could take a walk down memory lane together and chat about these three iconic Pokémon.
Let’s chat about the Kanto starter Pokémon – Bulbasaur, Squirtle and Charmander
First up, let’s talk about Bulbasaur. This cute little creature has been a fan favourite since the very beginning, and it’s not hard to see why. With those big brown eyes and a flower on its back that it can use to intimidate foes, Bulbasaur is a force to be reckoned with. Not only that, but it’s a Grass/Poison-type, which gives it a unique advantage against a number of other types. If you’re someone who likes to play it safe and take a more defensive approach in battle, Bulbasaur may be the starter for you.
Next, let’s move onto Squirtle. As the name suggests, Squirtle is a Water-type Pokémon, and it boasts an impressive array of water-based moves right from the start. It also happens to be incredibly cute, which is a plus. Squirtle’s shell is both a strength and a weakness – it can be used to protect it from attacks, but if it ends up on its back, it can struggle to get back up. However, with enough training, Squirtle can grow into a Blastoise, which is widely regarded as one of the most powerful Pokémon of all time.
Finally, we have Charmander. As the only Fire-type starter of the trio, Charmander can be a bit of a risk in the early game. It’s vulnerable to a lot of different types, and its movepool can be a little limited at times. However, if you can get Charmander past those early hurdles, it’s worth it. Not only is Charizard one of the coolest looking Pokémon out there, but it’s also incredibly strong. That Fire/Flying-type combo makes it tough to take down, and its Mega Evolutions only add to its power.
So, there you have it – a quick rundown of the Kanto starter Pokémon. Of course, at the end of the day, the decision between Bulbasaur, Squirtle and Charmander is always going to be a personal one. It’s all about your playstyle and what you want in a Pokémon. But no matter which one you choose, these three are a fundamental part of what makes Pokémon so special. And who knows – maybe one day we’ll get to see a new set of starters that live up to the legacy of these three.
